Maintaining the health of your pet's teeth is one of the most important things you can do to increase the comfort and safety of his/her life.
If your pet has been diagnosed with dental disease he/she will require dental cleaning, scaling and polishing and possibly extractions. This procedure will be recommended regularly through your pet's lifetime. Dental care is important because:
- pets with gingivitis are uncomfortable
- it helps ensure your pet keeps his/her teeth as long as possible
- gum and tooth disease lead to endocarditis (heart valve infection), kidney and liver disease and put constant pressure on the immune system.
- it helps reduce halitosis (bad breath)
- your pet's health care expense in later years is reduced by routine treatment and preventive care at home
Complete and effective treatment of dental disease requires a general anesthetic. To ensure maximum safety for your pet during this procedure we routinely perform pre-anesthetic blood tests, intravenous fluid administration, advanced anesthetic monitoring and peri-operative antibiotics. Your pet's teeth will be cleaned and sub-gingival tartar will be removed. A thorough examination of the gums, teeth and surrounding tissues will determine the need for further procedures such as extractions. Extraction sites will be sutured where possible (these sutures will not require removal). All tooth surfaces are then polished. Because your pet's comfort is very important we administer pain medications before and after the procedure.
